If you’d like to reap all the benefits of vinyasa yoga, learning how to breathe properly is key.

In a typical vinyasa flow, there’s an emphasis on linking the movement of the body with the breath. The specific breathing technique we use is called Ujjayi breath (ooh-jah-yee), or victorious breath.

Some of the benefits of this in a yoga practice include increased concentration, help with getting into the “rhythm” of a practice, and the ability to take fuller breaths even in challenging postures.

To practice Ujjayi breath, you’ll want to slightly constrict the throat on your inhales and exhales. Imagine that you’re fogging up a mirror, but the mouth is closed.

The inhales and exhales should be powerful and have a sound to them. Some yoga teachers call it a “Darth Vader breath” because of that.
