If you’re a newer yogi or you’re thinking about hitting up that yoga class, there are some helpful tips you should hear.
The best advice for beginner yoga practitioners is to start doing it and keep at it. Beyond that, however, here are some things to keep in mind while you pursue the practice.
- Find a good teacher. A good teacher can make or break your practice, particularly when you’re starting out. Look for someone qualified, competent, and compassionate. The last quality might be the most important.
- Go slow (at first). While you may want to jump right into a fast-paced power Vinyasa flow, starting with a slower-paced class is a good idea to learn the poses and proper alignment. Jumping into the quicker stuff too early can lead to injury.
- Be gentle with yourself. Don’t compare your body or the poses you do to others. Focus on what the pose feels like, and not what it looks like. Also, listen to your body and know when to back off a pose. Yoga shouldn’t hurt.
- Remember your breath. Yoga is as much about the breath as it is about the body. Focus on your breath during your practice. Feel it flow through you. Use it to drive your awareness.
